All large vessels, particularly those over 200Gt require all crew to hold a certain minimum number of certification levels in order to safely man the vessel.
The minimum they usually need is the MCA Yacht Rating Certificate and it can take over 6 months to even be eligible. However, we are able to fast track this time to 3 months by offering a few courses to help you on your way.
Training
- We offer the full five days on site STCW Basic Safety Training Course
- RYA Competent Crew
- RYA Day Skipper Theory Classroom OR RYA Day Skipper Theory Online (With Invigilated exams)
- RYA Day Skipper practical
- ENG1 Medical Examination
Other useful qualification to gain:
- STCW Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (1 Day)
- RYA Powerboat Level 2 (2 Days)
- Approved Engine Course part 1 (AEC)
- VHF/GMDSS Short Range Marine Radio Course – Online or Classroom (1 Day)
We will help you through the paperwork process. You will then need to gain 2 months experience onboard a boat over 15m to fully gain the qualification.
To qualify as a Yacht Rating a candidate must:
- Be at least 16 years of age;
- Demonstrate at least 6 months yacht service including 2 months sea service, all of which must be on vessels 15 metres and over in load line length;
Or
Hold the RYA Competent Crew Certificate and RYA Day Skipper Certificate and attain 2 months sea service on vessels 15 metres and over in load line length. - Complete the five elements of approved STCW Basic Safety Training Course:
- Personal Survival Techniques
- Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
- Elementary First Aid
- Personal Safety & Social Responsibility
- Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
4. complete the Yacht Rating Training Record Book if following the path shown in the first of option 2 above.
5. Hold a medical fitness certificate such as an ENG1 Medical Examination
MSN 1862 has full details and the required Yacht Rating Training Record book is in Annex B
Candidates then apply to the MCA using application form MSF 4340 enclosing the above documentation to receive a Yacht Rating Certificate.
